Makueni First Lady, Partners Leads Charge Against Obstetric Fistula

With over 42 women and girls having been successfully operated on, Makueni First Lady Anita Mutula, the department of health services and various partners, are leading the charge against obstetric fistula.

On Thursday, Anita spearheaded the county's commemoration of the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula at the Mother and Child Hospital in Wote. This year’s theme, "Breaking the Cycle - Preventing Fistula Worldwide," emphasizes the need to tackle the root causes of obstetric fistula and the poverty that exacerbates it.

In addition to the successful surgeries, another 73 women and girls are awaiting treatment, Anita revealed. She reaffirmed her dedication to reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health, promising to raise awareness about fistula and address disparities in obstetric care.

In partnership with the Ministry of Health, Anita launched a training and mentorship manual for fistula surgeons. Elizabeth Muli, the Acting Chief CEC in charge of Health Services, committed to ongoing partnerships and stressed the importance of policies that prioritize maternal health and the training of skilled birth attendants.

In a speech delivered by Dr. Karen Aura on behalf of PS Harry Kachuwai, the Ministry of Health reiterated its dedication to eradicating fistula, reassuring Kenyan women that efforts to eliminate the condition are progressing.
